When Stand Up Paddle first began

Contrary to what one might think, Stand Up Paddle is the ancestor of surfing, not the other way around. It was practiced by Polynesian kings who carved their boards in tree trunks. It was in 1940-50 in Hawaii, that this practice really grew thanks to the influence of beach boys. Most often used for swimming monitoring, today the SUP is practiced in 3 ways:

  • Cruising (the ride)
  • Race (racing on the coast and high seas)
  • Surfing (unlike surfing): the paddle takes the wave standing and propels itself with its paddle

It is a sport that enjoys a great enthusiasm and is very easy for beginners. It is the ideal sport for people wanting to surf the water without attacking the waves. And for the the more experienced, circuits of competitions have been set up with the SUP French Championship, attached since 2010 to the French Federation of surfing.

Relax with Stand Up Paddle

Everything is different on the water. Get away from the city and along the coast, SUP allows you to enjoy the landscape with a new point of view, without going too far. You will discover a new sensation, and you will feel absolute freedom. SUP is also a great way to find yourself and disconnect from everyday life. The fact of being in the open air will allow you to energise and absorb vitamin D, not forgetting the relaxing effect of the sound of the waves and the benefits of the mineral contributions of the ionised air.

Toning the body

Even at a slow pace, rowing intensifies the heart rate and requires the effort of several muscles:

  • Arms and shoulders, allowing you to row
  • The legs that ensure your balance on the paddleboard
  • The abdominal belt and back muscles to transmit energy to the upper body
  • If you want to work your cardio, choose an inflatable paddleboard. A few minutes to pump guarantee an effective warm-up.

After several tries, if you have fallen in love with this sport, you are not the first one. It’s time for you to go on an adventure for longer hikes than any other, whether river, sea or lake.
